The incident took place in Hartford County around 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 8, near New Britain High School.
According to New Britain Police Chief Christopher Chute, the teen was shot by suspects in an early 2000s light blue or light gray Nissan Altima.
During a news conference on Tuesday, the chief said the department is searching for the car.
After the shooting, the chief said the teen was able to talk and move around. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
“He had non-life-threatening injuries,” Chute said.
“All of our officers are working on this diligently,” Chute said.
In response to the shooting so near the school located at 110 Mill St., there will be a stepped-up police presence at the school, the chief added.
Police believe the teen knows the person who shot him, Chute said.
When notified of the shooting, the school went into a lockdown to allow the police department to investigate.
Around 12:15 p.m., police asked the school to switch from a lockdown to a shelter-in-place order because they had determined that there was no threat to students or staff, the chief said.
Police are checking video surveillance in the area in hopes of catching the offending vehicle on camera.
